30 May 2023, Manila – Consul General Emil Fernandez and Mayor Derek Kawakami co-led a delegation from Kauai, Hawaii in its “Sister Cities and Business Development Visit” to the Ilocos Region and Manila from May 20 to 26. Also forming part of the delegation were 18 other participants comprised of Kauai County officials, Filipino community leaders and business sector representatives. The trip afforded county officials the opportunity to renew its sister and friendship city ties with the municipalities of Laoag, Candon, Bangued and Santa. It also enabled the delegation to engage with leading officials of the provinces of Ilocos Sur and Abra, as well as the municipality of Cabugao. In a bid to further intensify trade and investment relations between Hawaii and the Philippines, discussions also took place with the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) and American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) of the Philippines, with Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii (CCH) President and CEO Sherry Menor-McNamara leading this effort.
