20 June 2023, Honolulu, Hawaii, USA – The Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu partnered with the Philippine Celebrations Coordinating Committee of Hawaii (PCCCH) in staging this year’s Independence Day gala at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Hotel last June 17.

In his remarks, Consul General Emil Fernandez underscored the Philippines’ positive trajectory as reflected in its economic performance and emphasized the contribution of the Filipino diaspora to the country’s development. He also cited their crucial role as ambassadors of Philippine culture and their impact in promoting the country’s global image.
Speaking on behalf of the Hawaiian State Government, Lt. Governor Sylvia Luke highlighted the strong ties between the Philippines and Hawaii and recalled the Filipinos who first arrived in 1906 as sugar plantation workers. She also acknowledged the efforts of the younger generation to include Philippine history in Hawaii’s curriculum, the value of remembering the sacrifices of the Philippine revolutionaries in the 1800s, and honoring the freedom they fought for.
The paintings and Filipiniana creations of Mr. Edgar San Diego were featured during the activity, while several community members showcased their talent through various cultural performances. Approximately 350 people attended this year’s gala held at the resort’s Tapa Ballroom. (END)
