PRESS RELEASE NO. 91-2023

17 August 2023, Honolulu – In celebration of Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa, the Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu, in partnership with the Film Development Council of the Philippines and the University of the Philippines Alumni Association of Hawaii (UPAAH) officially opened Sinehan sa Konsulado 2023 yesterday, with a special screening of “Kun Maupay Man It Panahon” (Whether the Weather is Fine).

In her message, Vice Consul Leizel Caasi shared the importance of introducing the rich cultural and linguistic heritage and sharing this to the wider audience through films. She further highlighted the growing interest of Filipino filmmakers in using the local language in their films, to provide a more truthful portrayal of their subject. She added that showing “Kun Maupay Man It Panahon” is fitting as it provides the audience an insight to the psyche of survivors of unprecedented disasters.

UPAAH President Mylene Reyes emphasized the value of sharing Philippine heritage to the migrant community, especially the younger generations. She also drew parallelisms between recent calamities the community has faced and the story of the survivors of the Super Typhoon Haiyan, as depicted in “Kun Maupay Man It Panahon.”

In his message, “Kun Maupay Man It Panahon” writer and director, Carlo Francisco Manatad shared that, as one of the survivors of Typhoon Haiyan, the film was very personal to him. He reflected that by using the local language, Waray Waray, he was able to capture the honesty and sincerity of the experience.

The featured films, with English subtitle, will be screened at the Consulate’s lanai following the below schedule:
