12 October 2023, Honolulu – Consul General Emil Fernandez joined a panel of distinguished speakers during The Philippines Matters for Hawai’i / Hawai’i Matters for the Philippines forum last October 10 at the IMIN Conference Center of the East-West Center. The activity, featuring leaders from government, business, the academe, and student-collaborators of the Filipino Curriculum Project, was co-organized by the Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu, East-West Center, and the University of Hawaii at Manoa Center for Philippine Studies.
Important topics on the potential of the significant Filipino population in Hawaii were discussed, including increased representation of Filipinos in education, business and politics, among others. Student-collaborators of the Filipino Curriculum Project also shared that the high school Social Studies elective on Filipino History and Culture will be taught in the fall of 2024 in Waipahu and Farrington high schools. The audience was treated to impressive song and dance performances by seasoned local artists Ms. Angeli Callo, Dr. Wayland Quintero, Dr. Desiree Quintero and students, and a poetry reading by Dr. Luisa Igloria, Poet laureate of Virginia.
The event “honored the longstanding relationships between the Philippines and Hawaii and the Philippines and the United States” and coincided with the observance of Filipino American History Month. (END)
