31 January 2024, Honolulu – Consul General Emil Fernandez was given a special tour last January 29 of the impressive facilities of the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM), ranked among the best medical schools in the country. Providing the briefings were Dr. Kamal Masaki, Professor and Chair of the Department of Geriatric Medicine, and Mr. Aaron Mandich, Associate Director of Development of JABSOM. Consul General Fernandez was accompanied by Dr. Gregoria Poblete-Villaflor and Dr. Vivencio Villaflor of Dagupan Doctors Villaflor Memorial Hospital, one of the leading health care institutions in Northern Luzon.
Currently situated at a site chosen by former Governor Ben Cayetano that opened in 2005, JABSOM was identified in a 1992 Harvard University study as one of ten leaders in medical education reform. It holds the designation of being a land-, sea- space-, and sun-grant institution, one of only four in the nation. The school likewise houses the largest biomedical research facility in Hawaii and is home to the first clinical department in an accredited medical school in the nation that is focused on health disparities of an indigenous population.
