26 March 2024, Honolulu – The Philippine Consulate, in partnership with the Filipino Association of University Women (FAUW), organized “Himig ng Pilipina sa Nakaraang Siglo: Contributions of Filipino Women to Philippine Pop Music in the Last 100 Years” last 22 March.

In his remarks, Consul General Emil Fernandez cited the strides the Philippines has made on gender issues and the notable role women in Philippine society have played.  He explained this year’s theme for Women’s Month, “Lipunang Patas sa Bagong Pilipinas: Kakayahan ng Kababaihan, Patutunayan,” and the call for a Bagong Pilipinas where women are given equal opportunities, not hindered by bias or discrimination, and engage and benefit from the country’s growth.

During the lecture-concert, Mr. Paul Cosme, an accomplished young composer and scholar, provided an overview of the significant influence of women in the Philippine pop music industry and highlighted their role as trailblazers of the genre. He cited the work of pop icons, such as Pilita Corrales, Sharon Cuneta, Sarah Geronimo, and composer Odette Quesada, and also explored the evolution of Philippine pop music and changing consumer tastes.
