5 April 2024, Honolulu – Officers of the Philippine Consulate General held interactive discussions with students of Filipino descent attending Farrington High School and Waipahu High School in Honolulu last April 3 and 4. The students are a mix of recent migrants and first, second, and third generation Filipinos in Hawaii.

Consul Pamela Durian-Bailon, Consul Grace Bulos and Vice Consul Leizel Caasi represented the Consulate during the engagements.

Consul Pamela Durian-Bailon (seated, leftmost) answers a question posed by a Waipahu High School student. She is joined by Vice Consul Leizel Caasi (seated, 2nd from left), Mr. Karlo Tanjuakio (seated, rightmost), and the moderator, Mr. Neal Alegado (podium).

The Philippine consular officers answered the students’ questions on Foreign Service as a career, Philippine culture, the Filipino diaspora, climate change, education, and business opportunities.

The activities were organized to ramp up interest for the students’ Filipino Culture History course, which will be offered during the fall semester in both schools. The course was a product of the student-led initiative among Filipino students in Honolulu, who are interested in reconnecting with their Filipino roots.

Mr. Karlo Tanjuakio, CEO of Go Lean Six Sigma, also shared upcoming grant and mentorship opportunities for students who wish to become entrepreneurs.

The engagements, supported by the respective school administrations, including Principal Zachary Sheets and Assistant Principal Matthew Mitsuyuki of Waipahu High School, were organized by Mr. Tanjuakio, Mr. David Chattergy of Farrington High School, and Mr. Neal Alegado of Waipahu High School. (END)
