PHOTO RELEASE NO. 73-2024
Consul General Emil Fernandez greets visitors viewing the “Ebolusyon ng Pananamit ng mga Pilipina” exhibit.
24 June 2024, Honolulu – In collaboration with Iris Viacrucis, the Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu staged a special exhibit entitled, “Ebolusyon ng Pananamit ng mga Pilipina: A Filipiniana Fashion Exhibit” at Sentro Rizal, Honolulu last June 18-22 as part of its national day celebrations.
The Hilo-based Filipino American designer displayed his collection of Filipiniana showing the evolution of the Philippine national attire. Some pieces on display date back to the 1900s, such as a brown terno ensemble featuring the traditional pinukpok fabric that used softened abaca. Another notable piece was a baro’t saya which used original indigo dye on the skirt. Mr. Viacrucis encouraged visitors to embrace the Filipiniana and for Filipinos to continue wearing their culture on their shoulders, with pride and dignity. (END)
Mr. Viacrucis demonstrates the versatility of the tapis, which is commonly used as a wraparound skirt.
