16 December 2024, Honolulu – Vice Consul Leizel Caasi joined the Sakada Day celebration at the University of Hawaii at Hilo last December 15, where the Filipino spirit of resilience and hard work took center stage.  During the event, Vice Consul Caasi had the privilege of meeting Mr. Rafael Taroma, the only known living sakada in Hawaii, along with his family.

In her remarks, Vice Consul Caasi honored the enduring legacy of the sakadas – Filipino plantation workers who toiled in Hawaii’s sugar and pineapple fields from 1906 to 1946. She emphasized the contributions of these workers not only to the economy of the Aloha State but also to its culture.

Also gracing the celebration were Hawaii County Mayor Dr. Kimo Alameda, State Representative Greggor Ilagan, descendants of the sakadas, and representatives from various Filipino and Filipino-American organizations in Big Island who showcased their talent through cultural performances. Mayor Alameda highlighted the importance of remembering one’s roots and heritage and embracing cultural diversity. The Sakada Day Committee, chaired by Dr. Norman Arancon, organized the activity.
