Artist Von Dickens Ulsa with a portrait of his grandmother
(13 August 2019, Honolulu, Hawaii) – Officers and staff of the Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu, together with Mrs. Araceli Jimeno, spouse of Consul General Joselito A. Jimeno, attended the OFVON: The Exhibition “Gone Gods” at the Entrepreneurs’ Sandbox in Honolulu on 10 August 2019.
Hawaii-based Filipino artist Von Dickens Ulsa, son of Mr. Dick Ulsa, local hire personnel of the Philippine Consulate General, and Ms. Cherrypie Ulsa, showcased illustrative interpretations of pre-colonial deities at the exhibit, offering a recontextualized approach of understanding Philippine history. Also on display were other outstanding works of Von, including a portrait of his grandmother that won first place at the Congressional Art Competition in Honolulu and was displayed at the Cannon Tunnel in Washington D.C. from 2012-2013.
26-year old Von graduated at the top of his class at Farrington High School in 2012. As a high school student, he received over 15 recognitions in art, including awards in national and international competitions. He completed a triple bachelor’s in American Studies, English, and History at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. After graduating summa cum laude in 2016, Von became an independent creative and freelance artist.
Von headlined for the Coachella Music and Arts Festival in 2017, and showed his works in Los Angeles, Seattle, Washington DC and Honolulu. He has sold commissions in Spain, Sweden, and Germany.
Von will attend the University of Wisconsin Law School in Madison in the fall of 2019. (END)
