(21 October 2018, Honolulu, Hawaii) Consul General Joselito A. Jimeno and the Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu partnered with Spyron AV Manila and the Filipino Community Center to present a special screening of the documentary film “Unsurrendered 2: The Hunters ROTC Guerillas” on 21 October 2018 in commemoration of the Filipino-American History Month.
The documentary tells the story of young men deemed too young to join World War II who fled to the mountains and became guerillas. Determined to fight for country and home, the Hunters ROTC became one of the most organized and effective guerilla units against the Japanese, providing intelligence that helped Gen. Douglas MacArthur return to the Philippines.
More than 200 guests attended the film screening held at the Filipino Community Center in Waipahu, including Filipino-American veterans and their families. Among them was Mrs. Salome Villamarin-Calderon, 92 years old, who with her family members belonged to the Hunters ROTC Guerillas Angono Unit. Mrs. Calderon is a U.S. Congressional Gold Medal awardee.
In his message to the guests, Consul General Jimeno noted that Filipinos in the United States have celebrated Filipino-American History Month for a long time, and that the State of Hawaii has officially recognized October as Filipino-American History Month. The Consul General said that veterans are close to his heart because his father, Eleuterio C. Jimeno, Sr., was also a World War II veteran and was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal for Filipino Veterans of World War II last May 2018.
Many guests expressed appreciation for the film, particularly those from generations following World War 2 whose knowledge of the war largely came from accounts shared by their parents or grandparents.
The film “Unsurrendered 2: The Hunters ROTC Guerillas” will also be shown at Farrington High School in Honolulu on 23 October 2018. (END)
