(9 September 2019, Honolulu, Hawaii) – Deputy Consul General Angelica C. Escalona of the Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu visited the University of Hawaii Maui College on 6 September 2019 to discuss with faculty members and students of Filipino descent activities that may be held on campus to promote Philippine culture as well as cooperation between the college and education institutions in the Philippines.

The University of Hawaii Maui College is an accredited college that offers three bachelor of applied sciences degrees, a wide variety of associate degrees and certificates, and distance learning degrees. With an enrollment of over 3,000, the college has many Filipino-American students. Popular courses include the associate degrees in nursing, dental hygiene, hospitality and management, and culinary arts.

University of Hawaii Maui College Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Debra A. Nakama, PhD gave Deputy Consul General Escalona a tour of the campus. The Vice Chancellor, who visited the Philippine Consulate last June, noted that the University of Hawaii Maui College has partnerships with a number of higher education institutions in the Philippines including the University of the Philippines in Diliman and Mapua University.

After the campus tour, Deputy Consul General Escalona and Vice Chancellor Nakama met with members of the Kabatak Club, whose aim is to promote Philippine culture and keep Filipino values and traditions alive through various activities. The club aims to have at least one community service and one activity each month.

The Deputy Consul General shared with the students initiatives of the Philippine Consulate in Honolulu to promote Philippine culture such as the Piña-Seda textile exhibit last year and the Filipino Food Week this year. She encouraged the students to participate in the Filipino Young Leaders Program (FYLPRO) and the Diskubre Tour. She also listened to the views of students and faculty, who expressed interest in collaborative activities in fields such as science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), agriculture, language, fashion, and volunteer work.
