(22 March 2018, Honolulu, Hawaii) - In line with its thrust to make its services more accessible and convenient for Filipinos under its jurisdiction, the Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu traveled some 2600 miles to visit Pago Pago, American Samoa and hold a three-day consular outreach activity at Shan-J’s in Maleimi from 16 to 19 March 2018.
American Samoa, an incorporated territory of the United States located in the South Pacific Ocean, is under the consular jurisdiction of the Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu, along with the State of Hawaii. It is home to almost 2,000 Filipinos who are mostly employed in construction, tailoring and fishing industries.
The nine-member consular team, led by Consul Joyleen E. Santos, provided almost 600 services including passport renewal, authentication of document, filing civil registrations of birth and marriages, as well as registration of new overseas voters. The three-day activity was held in coordination with the Filipino Community in American Samoa (FCAS), the only Filipino organization in the island.
The FCAS, led by its President Renato M. Sello, also hosted dinner receptions for the consular team, expressing their appreciation to the Philippine Consulate General for conducting this annual activity, which particularly benefits those who are unable to travel to the Honolulu office to avail themselves of the Consulate’s services for lack of a valid US visa.
Consul Santos assured them of the Philippine Consulate’s willingness to extend timely assistance to Filipinos in American Samoa and that it will endeavor to visit Pago Pago every year as what it has been doing for the past years. (END)
