4 October 2010.  Speaking at the official launching of the 2010 celebration of the Filipino-American History Month held on 2 October 2010 at the Hawaii State Library in Honolulu, Consul General Leoncio Cardenas highlighted the important work of the Filipino-American Historical Society of Hawaii (FAHSOH) in kindling the “the torch of Filipino legacy” in the State of Hawaii and dedicating the month-long celebrations to the Fil-Am youths to whom the “torch will be passed.”

On 15 April 2008,  Governor Linda Lingle signed into law HB 3343 designating the month of October as “Filipino-American History Month.” The bill was introduced primarily by Representative Joey Manahan.

Activities for the October celebrations organized by FAHSOH, in cooperation with the Hawaii State Library and the Office of Multi-Cultural Student Services, include the photo exhibit “Art as a Weapon: Corky Trinidad’s Cartoons”,  the family story telling event entitled “Anak” and book presentation of Dr. Patricia Brown’s “KULA SAN Maui’s Healing Place.”

Earlier, on 1 October 2010, Consul General Cardenas attended a special Flag Raising Ceremony at the City Hall of Maui in celebration of the Filipino-American History month. Activities during the event included the singing of the Philippine National Anthem and the reading of the Proclamation for Fil-Am History Month and message by Maui Mayor Charmaine Tavares. The event was attended by Maui City Officials and Filipino community leaders.
