Philippine Consul General Gina Jamoralin and the Consulate’s Assistance-to-Nationals (ATN) Officer, Mr. Rodel Tejada, visited the Honolulu Fish Auction on 20 January 2017 in order to observe and understand how Hawaii’s fish industry is managed in terms of quality, safety and sustainability. Post was also accompanied by Pastor Jerry Saludez and Honolulu City Councilmember Joey Manahan and his staff.
Mr. John Kaneko, Program Manager of the Hawaii Seafood Council, who conducted the tour, explained in detail how and what type of fish are caught (mostly yellowfin tuna and swordfish) and the process of handling the fish to preserve its quality, from the fishing vessels to the auction area where the buyers select the best catch of fish and ultimately selling the fish to restaurants and retail markets in Hawaii and the US Mainland.
The American fishing vessels have primarily foreign crewmen, including Filipino fishermen. (END).
