OSHA Area Director Roger Forstner and Consul General Gina A. Jamoralin met on 16 March 2017 at the Philippine Consulate General to discuss the establishment of an alliance to promote Filipino workers’ occupational safety and health.

Consul General Gina A. Jamoralin met on March 16, 2017 with Mr. Roger Forstner, Area Director of the U.S. Department of Labor- Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Honolulu Area Office (OSHA) to discuss details of an agreement between the Philippine Consulate General, Honolulu (PCG) and OSHA to promote worker safety and health.

The overall objective of the agreement is to establish a collaborative partnership to provide Filipino workers in Hawaii and American Samoa access to resources to promote their occupational safety and health, and help them understand the rights of workers and the responsibilities of employers under the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSH Act).

OSHA and PCG had partnered in the past to promote worker safety. In 2013, they set up a seminar for fishermen on the topic of safety aboard fishing vessels, and in 2015, a seminar for caregivers was held.

Since PCG-OSHA agreements take two years, and the last one expired in 2015, PCG-OSHA, starting in 2017 aims to develop training and education programs for Filipino workers in the fishing industry, hotel and beauty services, healthcare, food and restaurant, construction and landscaping industry. END
